Local Doctors and Dentists

Before coming to Spain obtain the new European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

•   An EHIC** will cover you for emergency healthcare treatment in Spain. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) replaced the old E111 in 2006.
•   It will not cover any private medical healthcare or costs such as mountain rescue in ski resorts, being flown back to the UK, or lost or stolen property.
•   Dental treatment in Spain is almost entirely private.

**The EHIC(formerly E111) is for tourists and ensures that you do not end up having to pay for treatment during your first few months in Spain. The Spanish Health-care system is very good and most hospitals are modern and well equipped with excellent doctors. The Spanish nurses are well trained and efficient but do not always carry out personal care, as this sometimes falls on the family to do.
